Fracture Classification OTA

The Orthopaedic Trauma Association (OTA) universal classification has five parts:

  • The name of the bone e.g. humerus, radius/ulna, femur.
  • The location of the fracture e.g. proximal shaft, diaphyseal, malleolar.
  • The type of fracture e.g. simple, wedge, complex.
  • The geometry of the fracture e.g. transverse, oblique, spiral, segmental.
  • Other features such as stability, displacement, angulation and shortening.

Attempts are being made to amalgamate the AO and the OTA classifications.

Further information about the classification of specific fractures is available from the Orthopaedic Trauma Association.
